HKUST Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering Visits Canton Biologics to Discuss Technology Commercialization

On January 5–6, 2024, Professor Liu Yuanshuai from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) led more than 40 faculty members and students from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering to visit Canton Biologics. Mr. Zhang Chunhua, Vice President of Canton Biologics, welcomed the delegation on behalf of the company’s senior management team and delivered an opening address. This visit marked another in‑depth collaborative interaction and discussion between the two sides, following a special seminar given by Dr. Shen Xiao, CEO of Canton Biologics, at HKUST in October 2023.

In his welcome speech, Mr. Zhang stated: "As a leading biotechnology company originating from the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area, Canton Biologics currently has R&D and manufacturing bases in Guangfo (Guangzhou‑Foshan), Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Berlin, Germany. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has always been one of the benchmarks in education, renowned for its excellent teaching quality, outstanding research achievements, and innovative entrepreneurial environment. Through cooperation with HKUST, Canton Biologics can jointly explore and develop innovative solutions, establish technology transfer platforms in the Greater Bay Area, promote the exchange of knowledge and technology, advance research and innovation, and provide international academic and career development opportunities for our students and employees."

During the two half‑day visits, the HKUST delegation toured Canton Biologics’ R&D and production sites in Guangzhou and Foshan. Dr. Lin Mingxing, Head of the Bethlehem Industrial Base; Mr. Wei Qingkun, Head of the Gaoteng CGT Industrial Base; and Mr. Lu Zhijian, Quality Director of the Kunlun Industrial Base, each delivered thematic presentations. The faculty and students showed strong interest in the advanced equipment and technologies used in Canton Biologics’ R&D work and engaged in in‑depth exchanges and discussions with the company’s R&D personnel.

During the concluding session, Professor Liu Yuanshuai remarked: "As early as when Canton Biologics was first established, the company’s senior management had already established close cooperative relationships with HKUST in areas such as scientific research exchange, student education, professional certification, and internship and employment. In January 2020, I first led forty students to visit Canton Biologics for study. Four years later, we have revisited the company and are pleasantly surprised to see its remarkable development – whether in terms of financing scale, R&D and production personnel, facilities and equipment, or projects and achievements, there has been a qualitative leap. I firmly believe that Canton Biologics and HKUST will achieve even more in future scientific research cooperation and student training. Once again, thank you for your support and assistance, and I look forward to maintaining a long‑term friendly partnership with you."

In 2024, Canton Biologics will continue to engage in comprehensive and effective cooperation with HKUST and other higher education institutions at home and abroad, taking the establishment of the "Joint Research Center for Biology and Medical Technology" as an opportunity to promote the industrialization of research achievements and conduct high‑level technical exchanges.
